Jan Ting v. Mike Protack, New Castle County Debate

Last night I attended the New Castle County Committee Debate between Mike Protack and Jan Ting, who both wish to run as a Republican against the incumbent Carper. Rick Jensen, host of the afternoon block on WDEL, hosted the debate, adding a level of entertainment not normally seen in this kind of event.

Ting won the toss and went first with the opening statements. Mike Protack started out in an ominous fashion, trying to crack a joke 'from Washington' about the Pope and George Bush walking on water. A Pope joke? Really?

The issue of Ting's mild anti-Vietnam War past was not avoided. Protack warned that veterans, as a block would refuse to vote for Ting, calling them "pro-flag people." How many people are anti-flag? Ting suggested it was an insult to veterans to say that they were not independent thinkers and voters.

Protack also decimated his "conservative record" by calling for Universal Health Care, the details of which are on his website. One of the attendees remarked to me that Protack's website was "a website reminiscent of the 2004 Kerry campaign...a portal through which information lives, which the candidate does not know by memory."

Jan Ting won the straw poll with 39 votes to Protack's 15. Ting has won every debate.

When will Protack realize he is not a viable candidate and drop out?

He won't. Don't get your hopes up. Look at the bright side. Ting will be able to double-dip from donors.

Double-dipping is fine... in theory. Check Bill Lee's campaign finance reports. He didn't get nearly the financial support he could have - and that was against a wildly unpopular incumbent. Tom Carper is a lot of things, but unpopular isn't one of them. Neither is bright, but that hasn't mattered in the past.

Bill Lee didn't get enough money because he spent his previous campaign crusading against all the large Republican donors. He pissed off the regular max donors who would be the double-dippers. Ting won't max out either, for different reasons, but Protack will mean more money for Ting.

The Hartly Debate was really a forum because no interaction was allowed, that would not be "beneficial" to the audience. Also, the questions were read by panel guests who were not the real people behind the questions. It was a scripted event that had no bearing on the race whatsoever. However, the food was great.

The key line of the night was when Mr. Ting was asked about women's issues and he said he was delighted about the progress of women's sports. The sigh in the room was deafening. I responded that women were not conservative or liberal but overworked amd stressed out so maybe we should recognize their efforts by increasing the personal deduction, allowing more saving options pre tax and of course transforming health care.

A veterans poll was conducted that week and it revealed that 85% of Veterans polled (over 2000) would not support Mr. Ting and 86% would support Mike Protack. With veterans being about 30,000 votes in the election we risk losing this election very, very badly.

It doesn't go over well but without Veterans, there is no chance of being elected, period.

I noticed the comment about double dipping, Mr. Ting did not submit any FEC report for this period and did not file for the race until 17 April.

Stand by for real poll results.

Mike, haven't you filed wildly inaccurate reports in the past?

According to quotes from the WNJ in 2004, when you overstated the amount of money you had, you said "(t)hat was my estimate. I was off. I admit that." If you don't remember that exchange, it may remind you to know that it was around the time you were entertaining a lawsuit against Ron Williams for saying you didn't stand a chance. Since you got beat three to one, have you entained the idea of apologizing to Williams?
